What is it like to live in Suffolk?

Suffolk is filled with pretty villages, long stretches of coastline, historical cities, and plenty of green space to enjoy and explore. For families with children, Suffolk is a wonderful area to buy or rent property thanks to its excellent educational institutes. Top state secondary schools in Suffolk include Debenham High, Farlingaye High and Hartismere, which are all ranked as good or outstanding with Ofsted. The independent schools in Culford, Framlingham College, St Felix in Southwold, and the Royal Hospital School in Ipswich all have excellent reputations too.

If you are looking to commute into London, Greater Anglia rail lines go into Liverpool Street Station and Stratford (for the DLR). For a shorter commute time, choose areas close to the Essex boarder, within reach of the stations in or near Ipswich.

Both modern and residential properties with character are affordable in Suffolk. Victorian and Georgian terraced houses are more common in the larger towns such as Bury St. Edmunds and Stowmarket, while converted buildings and new housing developments are found in rural villages. Properties in Southwold include apartments with views of the sea and pier.

Suffolk’s property hotspots

Bury St Edmunds, Long Melford, Woodbridge with its river port, and medieval Lavenham are just a few of the better-known historical spots that draw the most tourists to Suffolk during the year.  Near Aldeburgh, the Snape Maltings hosts music festival each summer and a lot of people flock to the area to enjoy the coast and walking trails. The Suffolk coast which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty reaches all the way from Manningtree to just short of Lowestoft where The Norfolk Broads begin, with towns such as Southwold offering award-winning beaches.

The town of Newmarket is the headquarters of British horseracing and home to the largest cluster of training yards in the country (the National Horseracing Museum is also here). Suffolk is also home to ‘chocolate box’ villages such as idyllic Coddenham, Cavendish, and Thorpeness, which despite their rural setting are filled with great restaurants, pubs and amenities.
