You’re also not far from Whipsnade Zoo and Woburn Safari Park.

What is Bedfordshire like to live in?

Bedfordshire’s primary attraction for buyers and sellers is its travel connections into London, Oxford and Cambridge. Rail services to the capital run regularly and can get you to London within an hour. Journeys to Cambridge and Oxford take about two and a half hours. Bedfordshire is perfect for an escape to the country too, the Dunstable Downs, part of the Chiltern Hills, the forest of Marston Vale and Greensand Ridge are all areas of natural beauty. Canoeing, kayaking and leisurely river cruises on the Great Ouse river which runs through the centre of the county are all here for property hunters who like to stay active.

Shops, cinemas and restaurants in Bedford, Luton and Biggleswade are enough to keep you busy at the weekends. And Milton Keynes large shopping centre and theatre are just 20 miles away. There are many family-friendly events to be found in Bedford, particularly in the summer.

Some of Bedfordshire’s property hotspots

For larger properties and a flexible renting market, try Bedford. You can find flats within converted Victorian houses that sit close to the centre’s amenities. Luton is Bedfordshire’s commuter hotspot thanks to the airport, and here more modern properties are available, as well as some 1920s or 30s homes further from the town’s station.

Maintaining the county’s reputation for good travel connections is Sandy, a former Roman settlement which is now known better for its walks into the surrounding countryside. This is a great area to move to for families that want idyllic market-town living, within easy reach of the A1 for travelling further afield.

Oakley village, 10-minute drive from Bedford’s town centre, has many walks that follow the river, including one that tracks past the stately Oakley House. The village of Ickwell sits on the outskirts of Biggleswade, offering all the benefits of traditional village life, with thatched and half-timbered homes, but newer properties also available.
