The first cash machine supporting the Brixton Pound has recently opened in Market Row, Brixton where individuals can access the local, Brixton-only currency at almost any time of day. It is also the world’s first local currency cash machine.
The Brixton Pound was first introduced in 2009. Its aim is to show what a social economy might look like throughout the Brixton town centre. Individuals can spend this currency to show support for the project’s overall values.
The cash machine is funded by The Mayor’s High Street Fund, a comprehensive plan designed to bolster local businesses in the Brixton town centre.
Brixton haart’s Branch Manager Esta Wilson commented: "I think it’s an excellent promotion for Brixton as it’s a very vibrant location that’s extremely close to the city with very popular shops, bars and restaurants. It is still an area that is affordable as well, especially for investors and first time buyers. I myself have so many fond memories of the area and my parents are pleased that the area is getting the credit that it’s due. It is great we can now share how great this area is with the public by having our own money!"
The cash machine and can be accessed between the hours of 8am – 11:30pm between Tuesday and Sunday and 8am – 6pm on Mondays.
